GPAC Art

Art at the Heart of CAM

The James and Nancy Gaertner Performing Arts Center is more than a place for performance—it's a living gallery. Inside and around the building, visual art is thoughtfully integrated into the space, creating moments of inspiration for all who enter.

A curated collection of works by nationally and internationally recognized artists fills the walls and open areas, transforming the GPAC into one of the most visually engaging buildings on campus. The art celebrates SHSU’s commitment to creativity, community, and cultural expression.

Highlights of the Collection

  • Around the Flower WallJames Surls
A 16-foot wood and steel installation by SHSU alumnus and former professor James Surls, this striking sculpture anchors the visual experience of the GPAC and reflects the organic energy of the arts.

  • Works by Charles Pebworth, Joe Aker, Kathleen Ash, Jason Lawson, Tim Prentice, and Hoss Haley
From glass and metal to photography and kinetic sculpture, each piece invites viewers to pause, reflect, and engage. The collection includes contributions from respected artists and faculty, including a major work on permanent loan by Texas sculptor Jesus Moroles.

A Collaboration of Art + Architecture

The GPAC’s art collection was made possible through a partnership between WHR Architects, the SHSU art committee, and Texas-based consulting firm Art + Artisans. Together, they envisioned a space where architecture and visual storytelling elevate the everyday experience.

Experience It in Person

Visitors are welcome to explore the artwork inside the GPAC during regular building hours.

Across Campus

While the GPAC holds a unique collection of public art, it's just one example of SHSU’s broader dedication to visual culture. Art installations can be found throughout campus, adding beauty and meaning to the university environment.
